Kambodja möter Sverige

Just nu pågår CIU:s utbyte YPD med Kambodja. 24 deltagare från Sverige och Kambodja befinner sig i Stockholm, Umeå och Halmstad. Här berättar deltagarna Karona, Suchet och Phana om sina intryck av skillnaderna mellan Kambodja och Sverige.

“ We are really happy that we have the opportunity to tell you some of the difference between Sweden and Cambodia that we have discovered during our staying in Sweden.

Marriage and relationship

First of all we would like to talk about marriage and the relationship between boys and girl: For Swedish people, marriage is not as important as for Cambodia people. They can have children and decide to live together without getting married and if they want to get married or not is up to them. Swedish people can express their love by kissing and hugging everywhere they want like on the bus, train, and on the way even they are just simple friends or boy /girl friend. In addition to our noticing that Swedish boy can not sleep on the same bed and can not catch hand or put hand on the shudder each other on the way or bus because they will suspect that they are gay. Swedish girls can do as the same as boys like drinking beer, smoking and going for walk at night, etc.

Therefore, Swedish people, they are not shyness. For example in the Sauna room, they are naked in the room and they shower in a naked uniform. On the other hand, they are more independent when they are older than 18 years old; they can choose to live outside either alone or with their girl or boy friend. In despite of all telling that, Cambodian people, they cannot do that. They must married before they have children or live together as well as they can not kiss and hug each other in the public even they get married already. Furthermore, Cambodian boy they always sleep in the same bed together, but not boy and girl. Anyway, at night, Cambodian girls cannot go for walk. If they want, they can from 6pm to 9pm and with their relative like sister, brother or parents. Also, girls can not smoke, drink beer or go to the night club as the boys do. All of those activities, if they still try to do, they will be criticized by public in Cambodia.

What’s more, dependent, they usually live with their parents even they are 18 years or older. And the parents still, somehow, influence their sons though they got married already. If we talk about shyness, generally, Cambodian people are shyer than Swedish. For example, people in Cambodia do not naked shower in front of the others even though they are close friends or not. Only a few men dare to do that but not so many.

Political System

Cambodia adopted a parliamentary system. That is to say, we have a King as the head of state and a Prime Minister as the head of the government. But power in Cambodia is much more centralised in the centre. Sweden practices the same political system as Cambodia does, but the system is more decentralised. Much power is rooted in the local and provincial level.

Living standard

People in Sweden enjoy a very high living standard. Almost everyone could afford nice things to use or decorate their houses. Cambodian people has low living standard. People earn less than one dollar per day. A few people enjoy with sophisticate materials.

Traffic

Sweden has many large streets which are full of modern transportation such as subway, modern train and many cars or busses travelling along the streets and a lot of large brides, but Cambodian is full of motorcycle and small roads that make the traffic become very crowded, hard to travel and many accidence are happening everyday. In Cambodia, we don’t have subway. Most of Swedish drivers stop when they see the people want to walk across the road. Sweden Taxies are new and modern. They take only two or three travellers inside the Taxi and can earn a lot of money. Swedish people walk very fast and far in the morning and afternoon.

Most of the drivers in Cambodia, they didn’t stop when they see the people want to cross the road. Taxies in Cambodia are very old and they take a lot of travellers inside and if we want to pay low price we can sit on the top of the car.

Food

We have rice as the main food three times a day with other kind of food, but Swedish people, they have potatoes, bread and pastas as the main food

Climate

Cambodia is a hot and humid country. Cambodia has only two seasons. They are dry and rainy season. We don’t have snow. In spite of season, Sweden has 4 seasons, namely spring, fall, summer, and winter. During the fall it is very much colder than Cambodia already. And it will be very cold in the winter. So we can say that Sweden is a very cold country.

Clonclusion

In conclusion, Sweden is one of the rich and developed countries but Cambodia is a very poor developing country. However, we strongly hope and think that Cambodia will be developed and will live in a high standard as the other rich country soon because we have many natural, historical and human recourses.”
